Easter Ceremonies - from Jerusalem to Maramures
I used to attend and photograph The Holy Fire Ceremony in Jerusalem for many years. The Holy Fire (Greek 'Αγιος Φως, literally "Holy Light") is a miracle that happens every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, the day before Pascha. Many consider it to be the longest-attested annual miracle in the Christian world, although the event has only been documented consecutively since 1106.
This year, I spent time in Maramures, Romania, photographing the Easter ceremonies there. For a few days, the small churches were filled with prayers. These ceremonies are connected with the Resurrection of Jesus on the night of Easter. It's a custom in both the Orthodox and Catholic traditions, but the timing between the two is different due to the method of calculating the date. It symbolizes the Resurrection of Jesus, similar to the ceremonies in Jerusalem. The ritual is almost the same in every place in Romania.
